Paris Saint-Germain’s dream of winning the Champions League has been haunting the club since its Qatari takeover at the beginning of the last decade, and Kylian Mbappé, according to many, was the means to achieve that goal when he joined from Monaco in the summer of 2017.
Mbappé’s many attempts with PSG have all failed, the most notable of which was the 2020 Champions League final in Portugal, where the French club were defeated by Kingsley Coman’s goal.
Even in Mbappé’s final season, he said he would try to achieve glory before leaving, but he failed once again, as Paris Saint-Germain were eliminated in the semifinals.
Upon his move to Real Madrid, Mbappé stated that his goal was to win the Champions League, and that he longed for the so-called “Bernabéu Nights” during the toughest times of the major continental tournament.
In one year, the situation has completely changed.
Real Madrid, the 15-time Champions League champions, once at their best, completely collapsed this season. Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, has become the strongest and best team in Europe.
The Champions League was perhaps the most important battleground, during which Real were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Arsenal, and Mbappé made no appearance at all, both home and away.
On the other hand, PSG deservedly reached the final. Not only that, but this time, their attempt was 100% successful, winning the title with the biggest win in the history of the final against Inter, 5-0.
It was as if Mbappé had brought bad luck to Real Madrid, like a cloud that obscured the sunshine of the championships. However, that cloud finally left the Parc des Princes after seven full years, and the day that Nasser Al-Khelaifi and his teammates had dreamed of dawned, with PSG finally winning the Champions League title.
Mbappé has a huge task ahead of him next season, especially since Paris fans have mocked him extensively after his disastrous collective failure this season (despite his impressive individual performances), while the Parisian giants achieved a historic quadruple.
Mbappé’s jinx must be broken next season, otherwise there will be many doubts about his quality and positive impact on Real Madrid.
