Manchester United ‘confident’ Maguire will stay… but with a condition

Manchester United remains confident that a compromise can be reached that will allow Harry Maguire to stay at the club beyond next summer.

Maguire’s current contract expires at the end of June, and his future remains uncertain pending a final decision.

When Ruben Amorim was in charge, it seemed likely that Maguire would be allowed to leave as a free agent in the summer. However, the arrival of Michael Carrick as interim manager gave the veteran defender a new lease on life at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old defender has started all five matches in Carrick’s management, contributing to four wins and one draw, and reviving his defensive partnership with Lisandro Martinez. This improvement in form has given new impetus to talks about the future of Maguire, who has been at the club since 2019.

Maguire is one of the club’s highest earners, taking home around £180,000 a week, which makes him vulnerable to being sold as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to cut costs. However, BBC Sport reports there is confidence behind the scenes at United that a deal can be struck to keep Maguire.

This deal would likely involve a pay cut and a short-term contract, perhaps only covering the 2026/27 season. His future may also depend on whether the club decides to retain Carrick as the long-term manager.

Maguire will become a free agent when his contract expires on June 30, and was therefore allowed to speak to foreign clubs last January. Reports indicate that his representatives contacted Italian club AC Milan, but Carrick’s arrival to succeed Amorim – who was sacked on January 5 – resulted in no progress in that direction.
