James Trafford feels betrayed by Manchester City’s management and is considering leaving the English club in the upcoming winter transfer window.
Trafford joined City last summer from Burnley for €27 million, with clear promises from the club’s management that he would be the team’s first-choice goalkeeper for the current season.
However, after the first three matches and some errors by the English goalkeeper, Pep Guardiola decided to enter the transfer market and sign a new goalkeeper. City subsequently signed Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has since become the English giant’s first-choice goalkeeper.
According to the Daily Mail, Trafford is unhappy with his situation and feels betrayed after the numerous promises he received from City’s management last summer and the assurances that he would be the first-choice goalkeeper for the entire new season, only to find himself in his current situation.
With his lack of playing time, Trafford’s dream of representing England at the 2026 World Cup is now under threat, and he has already begun exploring options to leave the Etihad Stadium.
Newcastle United has emerged as a potential destination for Trafford, especially since the Magpies tried to sign him last summer before City did.
However, City are expected to block Trafford’s departure, as the club doesn’t want to risk having only one goalkeeper for a long season.
It’s worth noting that third-choice goalkeeper Stefan Ortega is also set to leave City in January after Guardiola relegated him to fourth-choice and he hasn’t featured in any matches this season.
