Financial expert Kieran Maguire has revealed the potential fate of Manchester City and the sanctions that could be imposed on the English club if they are found guilty of violating Financial Fair Play regulations.
A final court ruling on 115 charges against City for breaching the rules is expected in the coming weeks, following hearings that began in December 2024 without a verdict being announced.
Maguire indicates that if all charges are proven, Manchester City faces a points deduction of between 40 and 60 points, which would mean the club’s relegation to the English Championship.
These penalties would be similar to those imposed in previous cases involving Everton and Nottingham Forest, where points were deducted according to the number of violations.
The timing of the announcement of the verdict, whether upholding or dismissing the charges, remains unknown. This is due to the fact that there are over half a million people involved in the various cases, requiring careful and thorough review.
Manchester City is confident in its position, and the market supports this. The English club recently signed commercial deals with two major companies that would not have taken such a step unless they were certain of the club’s future security.
Manchester City likely expects only a small portion of the charges to be proven, resulting in relatively minor fines. Point deductions and relegation are considered highly unlikely by the club’s lawyers.
