Luka Modric Set to Extend AC Milan Stay After Allegri’s Urgent Request

Allegri Leads 3-Hour Planning Session Over Modric’s Future

According to reports from Calcio Mercato, Allegri held a marathon three-hour meeting with CEO Giorgio Furlani and Sporting Director Igli Tare to strategize for the upcoming season and review the current squad.

The primary focus of the discussion was Modric’s future. The Italian tactician is adamant about keeping the 39-year-old at the San Siro, intending to build the “Rossoneri” midfield around Modric’s veteran leadership and technical mastery. Allegri has personally urged the player to sign an extension, consistently emphasizing Modric’s growing importance to the club and reassuring him that his age is no barrier to high-level performance.

Modric Grants “Preliminary Approval” for Extension

Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Modric has given a preliminary “yes” to activating the 12-month extension clause. The Ballon d’Or winner is keen to continue his journey under Allegri and is particularly motivated by the prospect of leading Milan in the UEFA Champions League next season.

However, despite the near-complete agreement, Modric prefers to wait until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup before officially putting pen to paper. There remains a slight possibility that the midfielder could retire following the tournament, depending on Croatia’s performance. Consequently, he has asked Milan officials for patience until his international duty concludes, at which point he will finalize his decision between renewal or retirement.

Sporting Director Igli Tare expressed optimism regarding the situation, telling Italian media: “I believe Luka will sign a new contract and stay with us for another season.”

Season Cut Short by Injury Ahead of World Cup 2026

Modric’s current season with AC Milan ended prematurely after he suffered a fractured cheekbone during last week’s Serie A clash against Juventus. The injury required surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the domestic campaign.

The legendary midfielder is expected to be fit just in time for the 2026 World Cup, where he is likely to wear a protective face mask. This will mark his fifth appearance in the prestigious tournament.

Statistically, Modric has been a workhorse for Milan this season, logging 2,788 minutes across 32 starts and only two substitute appearances. Remarkably, this playing time exceeds any of the totals from his final five seasons at Real Madrid, proving his enduring fitness and value.
