Despite the restrictions that European clubs usually impose on their players regarding fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, Liverpool star Hugo Ekieteke is determined to fast and affirms that the English club will support all its Muslim players in their choices in this regard.
Liverpool plays a large number of matches during Ramadan, which coincides with fasting hours. However, Ekieteke does not intend to miss the opportunity to fast, which he believes brings him closer to his faith and family and makes him a better person.
The French striker told Liverpool’s official website, “This month is wonderful because it brings me closer to my religion and my family. It makes me behave better and purer than usual.”
He added, “Of course, I intend to fast and I’m striving to have a wonderful month. I fast properly and I welcome my family home to break the fast together. I try to get closer to God than I am now, and not just during Ramadan.”
He continued, “Many of my family members are Muslim, so it’s never difficult for me. They support me in the best way. When we fast together and break the fast, we learn more about our religion, and that’s fantastic.”
Ekitiki noted Liverpool’s support for the Muslim players in this decision, saying, “We have a few Muslim players in the squad, so I know the club will help us a lot in getting through this month. We have 100% support from the club, and I’m excited about that.”
Fasting has not posed a significant obstacle in recent years, especially with clubs pausing matches to allow Muslim players to break their fast. Furthermore, the commitment of stars like Mohamed Salah and Lamine Yamal to observing the fast has prompted many clubs to reconsider their previous decisions to prohibit fasting.
