In a major surprise, Liverpool officials have convinced Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz to join the English club this summer.
Wirtz has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich for years, and Bayern president Uli Hoeness has announced his willingness to do anything to secure the 21-year-old.
In recent days, Wirtz and his father traveled to England where they met with Manchester City officials, but the English club withdrew from the deal due to its high cost.
All indications indicated that the German gem was on his way to Bayern Munich, and he even informed City officials of this.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool officials have succeeded in convincing Wirtz in the past few hours that a move to the Reds would be his best option.
Liverpool currently has the upper hand over Bayern Munich in the race to sign Wirtz, and the English club are confident that the deal will ultimately be theirs.
Bayer Leverkusen were initially asking for €150 million, but this amount could be reduced slightly through negotiation.
Wirtz would thus be the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history and in the history of the English Premier League in general.
If he joins, Wirtz would be the second Bayer Leverkusen player to arrive at Anfield this summer, after Liverpool completed the signing of Jérémy Frimpong in recent days for €35 million.
