Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with KRC Genk to sign promising Belgian goalkeeper Luka Bruegmans, marking a fresh step in the English club’s plan to overhaul its goalkeeping ranks.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Genk have granted the goalkeeper permission to undergo medical examinations, with contract execution and official procedures remaining to finalize the transfer.
The deal is valued at approximately €35 million, consisting of a fixed €33 million fee plus €2 million in add-ons. Bruegmans will remain at Genk on loan for the current season before completing his move to Anfield in summer 2027.
Nicknamed the “New Courtois,” the giant shot-stopper progressed through the same Genk academy that developed Thibaut Courtois. He wears the number 28 shirt as a tribute to the Real Madrid star, having received Courtois’ approval via a voice message.
Standing 2 metres tall, Bruegmans combines quick reflexes and a commanding box presence with calmness and two-footed ability to build play from the back—the key traits of a modern goalkeeper sought by Liverpool’s hierarchy, despite holding a record of just 15 first-team appearances for Genk (recording 5 clean sheets).
The signing comes amid Alisson Becker’s advancing age, with the 33-year-old Brazilian entering the final year of his contract running until June 2027. While Liverpool retained Alisson this summer, the club has actively begun planning for the post-Alisson era.
The move also raises questions regarding the future of Georgian backup Giorgi Mamardashvili, who arrived from Valencia in a deal worth nearly £29 million but has not displaced Alisson, with Nottingham Forest linked to his signature despite no official offer materializing to date.
Bruegmans becomes Liverpool’s latest summer investment, joining French defender Jérémy Jacquet from Rennes for around €70 million, Spanish forward Víctor Muñoz from Osasuna for approximately €40 million, and Ronald Araújo on loan from Barcelona, pending official completion following his medical.
