Liverpool in talks with a top Premier League striker

English media reported that Liverpool have opened negotiations with one of the Premier League’s most prominent strikers over the past two seasons to bring him to Anfield.

The Reds are looking for a new striker to replace Darwin Nunez, who is close to leaving the team. Italian Federico Chiesa is also set to leave, and with the death of Diogo Jota, there is an urgent need to add at least one more attacking player.

Foot Mercato revealed that Liverpool have met with representatives of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta to negotiate personal terms, in preparation for entering into talks with the London club regarding the deal.

Matteta’s height and physical strength have made him one of Crystal Palace’s most prominent players and have led to his inclusion in the French national team, both for the 2024 Paris Olympics and for the senior team in recent months.

The outcome of these negotiations is not yet known. Italian newspapers have previously linked Mateta to Milan, although it is unlikely the Rossoneri will be able to meet Palace’s asking price, which is expected to exceed £50 million.

The 28-year-old Mateta made 36 appearances for Crystal Palace last season, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists. He was a key factor in his team’s FA Cup triumph, their first major trophy in the club’s history.

It is worth noting that another English club, Manchester United, is interested in signing Mateta, but the Red Devils are currently focused on securing a deal for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
