Liverpool FC have confirmed that their Swedish striker Alexander Isak suffered a broken leg during the team’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last Saturday.
The Swedish striker underwent surgery on Monday, and while the club has not yet given a precise timeframe for his recovery, the 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for several months.
The injury occurred following a challenge from Spurs defender Mike van de Veen, who slid into Isak in an attempt to prevent him from scoring. Isak was unable to celebrate his goal and immediately signaled for medical attention.
Isak had already missed five matches between October and November with a thigh injury, and this latest setback further complicates his inconsistent start to his Liverpool career since his record-breaking £125 million move from Newcastle United this summer.
Isak has scored just three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool so far.
Liverpool will likely have to enter the winter market to bring in a new attacking reinforcement, with talk of Bournemouth star Antoine Simeone, who could be signed for just £65 million.
