Greek Super League outfit Levadiakos have officially announced the signing of Mohamed Elneny in one of the biggest transfer coups in the club’s history, hoping the former Arsenal midfielder’s vast experience can reverse their disastrous start to the domestic campaign.
Elneny arrives on a free transfer following the conclusion of his spell with UAE side Al Jazira. Greek media reports confirm the 34-year-old midfielder has penned a one-year deal, with negotiations finalized on the deadline day for unattached free agents.
Levadiakos currently sit bottom of the league table after five matchdays, collecting just a single point without scoring a single goal while conceding nine. The club’s misery was compounded by an early Greek Cup exit following a 3–0 defeat against Asteras Tripolis.
The team opened their league campaign with a 4–0 loss to PAOK, followed by back-to-back 2–0 defeats against Panathinaikos and Panetolikos, a goalless draw with Kifisia, and a 1–0 defeat to Olympiacos, putting manager Ilias Charalampous under immediate pressure.
Elneny moves to Greece after a seven-and-a-half-year spell at Arsenal, where he made 161 appearances, scored six goals, provided 10 assists, and won two FA Cups and two Community Shields, alongside reaching the 2018–2019 UEFA Europa League final.
The Egyptian international began his European career at FC Basel, lifting four Swiss Super League titles while registering 10 goals and eight assists in 144 matches. He also spent a season on loan at Besiktas from Arsenal. During his two years with Al Jazira, Elneny made 56 league appearances and scored three goals, completing his final season in the Gulf with 28 appearances across all competitions, two goals, and one assist.
Levadiakos unveiled their star addition by highlighting his 103 international caps and eight goals for Egypt, alongside reaching two Africa Cup of Nations finals and earning a spot in the AFCON 2021 Team of the Tournament. His immediate priority will be bringing leadership and stability to a side still searching for their first win and goal of the league season.
