A dramatic scene unfolded off the pitch during Milan’s 1-0 defeat to Lazio, with star winger Rafael Leão displaying a furious reaction after being substituted in the second half.
With Milan trailing to a first-half goal from Gustav Isaksen, coach Massimiliano Allegri opted for a tactical change with 25 minutes remaining, bringing on Niclas Füllkrug and Christopher Nkunku for Leão and Youssouf Fofana.
This decision clearly displeased the Portuguese star, who deliberately slowed his exit from the field, forcing goalkeeper Mike Maignan to rush over and urge his teammate to leave the pitch more quickly to save precious seconds in the search for an equalizer.
Leão then had a direct confrontation with Allegri. When the coach extended his hand to hug the player, the former Lille star quickly pushed his manager away before angrily kicking several water bottles near the substitutes’ bench in a public display of his frustration.
Speaking after the final whistle, Allegri attempted to calm the escalating situation, indicating that the player’s anger was directed at the game itself, not the coaching staff. The veteran tactician claimed that Leão felt he hadn’t received enough or the right passes during his time on the pitch.
“Leão was a bit annoyed because he had situations where he could have received better passes, so he was angry, but these things can happen during a game,” Allegri told DAZN.
This defeat cost Milan a significant opportunity to close the gap on the Serie A title contenders. Inter had drawn with Atalanta earlier, and a win for the Rossoneri would have reduced the gap to just five points.
