According to a report by Sport, Lamine Yamal is set to feature in Spain’s upcoming 2026 World Cup matches against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia. However, his playing time will be strictly limited under a direct decision by manager Luis de la Fuente to ensure the player’s optimal recovery.
The Barcelona star suffered a muscular injury about a month ago and is still in the rehabilitation phase. Initial expectations suggested he might miss most of the group stage matches.
Spain’s Group Stage Strategy for Yamal
The latest report indicates that De la Fuente, in coordination with the Spanish national team’s medical staff, has decided to give Yamal just 15 minutes against Cape Verde, provided he clears medical checks in the coming days.
For the second group stage match against Saudi Arabia, the 18-year-old winger is expected to play a maximum of 30 minutes.
Following these appearances, Yamal will undergo further medical tests. If he remains pain-free, the coaching staff intends to start him in the highly anticipated group-stage clash against Uruguay in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Updates on Nico Williams and Victor Muñoz
The Spanish newspaper also noted that a similar management plan could be applied to fellow injured winger Nico Williams. On the other hand, Victor Muñoz is expected to play a secondary role throughout the tournament, as he has failed to fully recover in time.
