Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has sent a bold warning to France, asserting that Les Bleus should fear Spain as the two footballing giants prepare for a highly anticipated heavyweight World Cup 2026 semifinal clash in Arlington, Texas, next Tuesday.
This marquee matchup was locked in after Mikel Merino struck an 88th-minute dramatic winner to hand Spain a 2-1 victory over Belgium on Friday. France, meanwhile, secured their spot in the final four after defeating Morocco 2-0 on Thursday.
Spain Dominating the Recent Head-to-Head
This upcoming semifinal represents the third high-stakes meeting between Spain and France in the last three years. Spain has held the upper hand in their recent rivalry, defeating France in both the UEFA Euro 2024 semifinals and the 2025 UEFA Nations League semifinals.
Speaking to reporters following the victory against Belgium at SoFi Stadium, Yamal expressed absolute confidence:
“If France should fear anyone, it’s us. We have knocked them out before, and we have beaten them twice. Honestly, I think we are the two best teams at the World Cup, so we will see what happens, but we do not have any fear.”
Breaking Down Defensive Blocks
Yamal, who successfully recovered from a hamstring injury to feature in the tournament, addressed critics who claim Spain’s attacking fluidness has stalled, blaming the defensive tactics of their opponents.
“It may seem to some that we are not playing spectacularly, but every team we face decides to drop deep and defend with everyone against us,” the Barcelona winger explained.
He concluded: “No team has dared to go toe-to-toe with us, but in the end, we got the win again today, and that is what matters most. We are thrilled to be in the semifinals; we have been here a long time and we want to go all the way to the final.”
