Algerian star Riyad Mahrez has returned to the forefront of the summer transfer market after a Spanish club entered the race for his signature, potentially offering him one final European experience following the end of his spell in Saudi Arabia.
According to La Gazette du Fennec, the 35-year-old is considering his options as a free agent and weighing a return to European football against accepting one of several Gulf offers, particularly as he plans to settle in the United Arab Emirates in the future.
The Spanish interest comes from Deportivo La Coruña, who have already strengthened their squad by signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traoré. Financial constraints could nevertheless threaten the deal, especially after Emirati club Al Wasl offered Mahrez a two-year contract with an option for a third season and an annual salary of €7 million excluding bonuses.
The former Algeria captain’s options are not limited to Spain and the UAE. He has been linked in Saudi Arabia with Al Shabab, Al Ettifaq and Abha, while two unnamed Qatari clubs have shown interest, including one that competes in the AFC Champions League Elite. His name was also offered to Morocco’s Wydad through an intermediary, although no direct negotiations have taken place so far.
Mahrez began his European journey with Le Havre before making history with Leicester City by winning the Premier League in 2016. He later joined Manchester City, where he lifted four Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and three League Cups, and was part of the historic 2023 treble-winning side. He also led Algeria to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Across three seasons with Al Ahli, Mahrez made 122 appearances, scored 37 goals and provided 46 assists, helping the club win back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles and the Saudi Super Cup. With an Emirati offer, a Spanish opportunity and interest from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Morocco, all eyes are now on the Algerian star’s final decision over his next destination.
