The move marks a significant shift in stance for the German icon, who had stepped away from competitive football following his retirement, choosing over the past two years to focus on his youth academy and personal projects.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Kroos aims to join the course scheduled for the 2027–28 season, after the dedicated elite-player pathway could not be opened this season due to UEFA limiting the program to just 20 seats annually.

Kroos currently holds a credential allowing him to manage up to the Spanish third division, benefiting from the fast-track system available to players who have spent seven or more years in professional football.

The former Real Madrid midfielder is presently qualified to serve as an assistant coach within a backroom staff, though he remains ineligible to lead a first- or second-division side as a head coach—a status that will change upon completing the course and securing his UEFA “A” license.

Over the past period, Kroos has actively overseen his academy in the Boadilla area, working on developing young talent in what served as his first practical experience with coaching and talent guidance following his playing retirement.

Real Madrid had previously discussed the possibility of his return to the club’s sporting structure, featuring dialogue between Kroos and General Director José Ángel Sánchez, though both parties were unable to find the right role or timing at the time.

Following an extraordinary career with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and the German national team, the upcoming coaching course appears set to serve as Kroos’s gateway to a new chapter—leaving the door wide open for a potential return to Valdebebas as a manager or sports executive in the future.
