Koundé’s Future Uncertain as Barca Target Dumfries and Cucurella

Internal debates are reportedly intensifying at FC Barcelona regarding the future of French defender Jules Koundé. Opinions within the club are split: some board members advocate for selling him to generate massive transfer revenue, while others oppose the idea, viewing him as a vital component of Hansi Flick’s squad.

Koundé played a pivotal role two seasons ago, featuring in almost every match. However, his performance level dropped noticeably last season, leading Flick to frequently favor João Cancelo or Éric García at the right-back position.

According to Spanish outlet Sport, Barca’s management believes that offloading Koundé could provide the financial flexibility needed to reinforce other defensive areas. The club expects a potential transfer fee to be no less than €70 million.

Given the 27-year-old’s recent dip in form, Barcelona’s sporting hierarchy feels the team would not suffer a heavy tactical blow. Instead, the funds generated from his sale could finance a natural right-back, or a new left-back, allowing Cancelo to return to his preferred right side permanently.

In the same context, Sport revealed that Sporting Director Deco is already exploring potential replacements. Barcelona are monitoring Inter Milan’s right-back Denzel Dumfries and Chelsea’s left-back Marc Cucurella.

To balance their delicate financial books and pursue either target, Barcelona must sanction at least one major departure. If Deco decides to press ahead for Dumfries or Cucurella, Koundé’s exit from the Camp Nou will become practically guaranteed.
