The controversy over the past two weeks has ended, and the identity of Real Madrid’s coach for the 2025 Club World Cup, scheduled to begin in mid-June, has been confirmed.
Carlo Ancelotti will step down as Real Madrid coach after failing to win any trophies this season. The club has finalized an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso to succeed the Italian coach.
Spanish media previously reported that Alonso refused to coach Real Madrid in the 2025 Club World Cup, believing the season was too long and the players were exhausted, making him unable to make a significant impact on the international stage.
However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid officials succeeded in convincing Alonso to change his mind, and he will now lead Los Blancos in the World Cup, which will be held in the United States.
Alonso will sign a three-year contract as Real Madrid’s coach in the coming days, starting June 1.
Real Madrid officials were keen to have Alonso as their coach at this stage, believing in his ability to quickly make a difference. They also did not want to appoint an interim coach despite the availability of Santiago Solari and Raúl González.
Real Madrid is in the final group of the World Cup alongside Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, Mexico’s Pachuca, and Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg.
