Egyptian media outlets have reported that Xavi Hernandez is close to taking over as Al Ahly coach, replacing sacked coach José Riveiro.
Al Ahly officially announced the termination of their contract with the Spanish coach following a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC in the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League.
Immediately, the names of potential coaches began to emerge, one of which was Xavi Hernandez, who left Barcelona in May 2023 and has not coached any other club since. Some even claimed that the Catalan had already agreed to coach Al Ahly.
Xavi’s agent, Fernando Solanas, responded to these reports very clearly, confirming that they are baseless. He also indicated that his client is not interested in working in the Egyptian Premier League in the next phase of his career.
Xavi had previously confirmed that he wanted to work in the top five leagues as his next stop, and had rejected offers from Qatar, both for the national team and Al Sadd, in recent months.
According to other reports, Al Ahly is currently in the process of appointing an interim Egyptian coach, most likely Emad El Nahhas, after negotiations with current Ceramica Cleopatra coach Ali Maher failed.
Al Ahly will search for a new foreign coach, and Jose Gomez, the former Al Fateh and Zamalek coach, is emerging as a strong candidate to lead the Red Castle.
