Twenty-two years later, Inter repeated Bayer Leverkusen’s famous tragedy, exiting without a title in a deeply unfortunate manner.
The Nerazzurri lost the Champions League title after a 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the final at the Allianz Arena.
Any football fan who relives Inter’s season will undoubtedly immediately recall Bayer Leverkusen.
In the 2001-2002 season, Leverkusen lost three titles in a single week, in extremely painful scenarios.
In the Bundesliga, Leverkusen lost the title on the final matchday to Borussia Dortmund and then lost the German Cup final to Schalke.
The biggest disaster was Zinedine Zidane’s legendary goal against Leverkusen in the Champions League final, which literally cost the German club everything.
Inter Milan have a similar, albeit less severe, scenario, having also lost everything in 2025.
It began with a Coppa Italia semi-final exit to Milan, a surprise that was unexpected given the clear difference in form in favor of the Nerazzurri.
Then came the huge disappointment of losing the Serie A title to Napoli by a single point, despite Simone Inzaghi’s side being in the driving seat had they won against Lazio in the penultimate round.
The end was truly tragic, as Inter were thrashed 5-0 by PSG, the heaviest defeat in Champions League final history.
It was a strong season without titles for Inter, and perhaps the end of an era at San Siro, with Simone Inzaghi and a number of other players expected to leave next summer.
