Inter Miami have announced an agreement with Argentine coach Cristian “Kily” González to take charge of the first team, in an attempt to rescue their season after a downturn in results despite having a star-studded squad led by Lionel Messi.
González will begin his duties once the necessary work permits have been obtained, while Guillermo Hoyos will continue to lead the team on an interim basis until the new coach and his staff arrive, according to a club statement.
Hoyos had taken temporary charge in April following Javier Mascherano’s resignation for personal reasons, but the management decided to end his spell after around four months as results fell short of expectations.
Inter Miami have failed to win any of their last five matches, suffering four defeats and one draw. They also exited the Leagues Cup in the group stage before losing 4-1 to Nashville, leaving them 10 points behind their rivals.
The 52-year-old González began his coaching career with Rosario Central in 2020 before managing Unión de Santa Fe and Platense. His spell with Inter Miami will be his first coaching experience outside Argentina.
The Argentine coach has yet to win a trophy, with qualification for the 2025 Copa Sudamericana with Unión standing as his most notable managerial achievement. His playing career was far more decorated, including an Olympic gold medal in Athens, the Spanish league title with Valencia and the Italian league title with Inter Milan.
González also briefly played alongside Messi for Argentina in 2005. They featured together against Peru, while Messi replaced him against Uruguay. Those matches came near the beginning of Messi’s international career and were González’s final two appearances for his country.
