At a time when the debate surrounding the fight against racism is reaching its peak, Real Madrid finds itself on the wrong side of events.
The story began when young defender Dean Hoesen shared a controversial screenshot on his Instagram account. Chinese users considered it offensive and racist because it mocked the features of Asian eyes.
As confirmed by the newspaper AS in a recent report, Real Madrid issued an official apology on behalf of the player via the club’s official Weibo account, the most popular social media platform in China.
The apology statement read: “I sincerely apologize to my Chinese friends. I previously shared content, unintentionally, that contained offensive messages. It was not at all intentional, and I regret the offense caused.”
Despite the club’s swift response, many Chinese fans expressed their dissatisfaction, demanding that the apology be published on global social media platforms for the entire world to see, rather than being limited to the Chinese platform Weibo.
While the club itself is leading the fight against racism, particularly in the case of its star player Vinicius Junior, it is crucial to ensure their campaign remains untarnished, especially given their repeated affirmations of their firm stance against racism in all its forms.
