History isn’t on Barcelona’s side much, especially considering the Catalans will face Inter away in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.
Barcelona needs a win at the San Siro to advance to the final, which will be played at the Allianz Arena and face the winner of the Paris Saint-Germain-Arsenal match, after drawing 3-3 with the Nerazzurri in the first leg of the semi-final.
Barcelona hasn’t won a semi-final away from Camp Nou since 2011, and this is perhaps an ominous sign for Hansi Flick’s side.
It all began in 2012, when Barcelona lost 1-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Then, in 2013, the Catalans suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Allianz Arena to Bayern Munich.
In 2015, Barcelona were defeated by Bayern Munich 3-2, but Luis Enrique’s side still managed to reach the final thanks to a 3-0 win in the first leg at Camp Nou.
The most recent experience was the most disastrous, when Liverpool came back from a 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou and pulled off a historic comeback with a 4-0 win in the second leg, advancing to the final and winning the title against Tottenham at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Flick hopes to break what could be considered Barcelona’s semi-final jinx and reach the final for the first time since 2015, with the hope of winning the Catalans’ sixth Champions League title.
