The 2026 World Cup clash between the United States and Paraguay witnessed a historic first in football technology. A new VAR (Video Assistant Referee) protocol helped the match referee overturn a yellow card originally handed to the hosts’ captain.
FIFA has introduced several groundbreaking updates to VAR operations for this World Cup. While the technology was previously restricted from intervening in yellow card incidents—limiting its role strictly to potential red cards—this new directive marks a major shift. The historic moment in the USA vs Paraguay match officially ushered in this new era.
How the New VAR “Identity Mistake” Rule Unfolded
Match referee Danny Makkelie initially called a foul on USA captain Tim Ream for a challenge on Miguel Almirón, promptly showing Ream a yellow card.
However, shortly after play resumed, the referee halted the game. He was alerted by the VAR room to review what is now officially categorized as an “Identity Mistake” or “Mistaken Identity” check.
Makkelie quickly headed to the pitchside monitor. Upon review, he discovered that not only was there no foul committed by Ream, but the yellow card was completely undeserved. The referee rescinded the booking for the American captain and instead showed Miguel Almirón a yellow card for simulation (diving).
This incident marks the first-ever implementation of the new FIFA rule, which allows video referees to intervene and correct the identity of a player receiving a yellow card or rectify wrongful bookings involving simulation.
