Legendary striker Thierry Henry heaped praise on Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal, comparing his “courageous” attitude and bold confidence against Atlético Madrid to the early days of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite Barcelona’s elimination from the Champions League on aggregate at the hands of Atlético Madrid, the 18-year-old lived up to his pre-match promise by scoring an early goal at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, briefly reviving his team’s hopes of a historic comeback.
During his analysis of the match on CBS, Henry was impressed by the teenager’s ability to match his ambitious pre-match statements with an elite performance on the pitch, saying, “That’s what the young Cristiano Ronaldo used to do!”
He added, “He would speak boldly in interviews and prove it on the pitch. Yamal said he would carry Barcelona on his shoulders, and within two minutes of the match, he had already scored.”
He added, “But what amazes me most is his courage. At such a young age, he plays with a confidence, creativity, and maturity beyond his years. He doesn’t hide; he demands the ball and makes the difference in the most crucial moments. That’s the mark of a truly special player.”
He concluded, “If he continues like this, working hard and staying focused, he has all the makings of becoming one of the best in the world. Lionel Messi had incredible talent, but this kind of bold confidence that Yamal possesses is unique and a joy to watch.”
It’s worth noting that Yamal’s goal against Atlético Madrid was his 40th goal contribution this season, having scored 23 goals and provided 18 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.
