Joško Gvardiol is on the verge of signing a new contract extension with Manchester City, dealing a significant blow to Real Madrid’s hopes of signing the Croatian international.
Following José Mourinho’s arrival as the new manager of Real Madrid, Gvardiol had emerged as a primary target. The “Special One” is determined to recruit a left-footed defender who can comfortably slot in at both center-back and left-back.
While initial talks had kicked off between Real Madrid and Gvardiol’s camp over the past few days, Manchester City countered by presenting a massive salary increase to keep the defender at the Etihad Stadium.
Contract Details: Gvardiol Set for Mega Deal Until 2032
According to Croatian media outlets, the 24-year-old defender has made up his mind and decided to accept Man City’s lucrative offer, committing his future to the Premier League champions until 2032.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester City executives are highly optimistic about finalizing the deal within hours, having reached a near-total agreement on all personal terms. Once Gvardiol gives the final green light to his agent, the contracts will be signed immediately, closing the transfer case.
Real Madrid’s Alternative Transfer Targets
With the Gvardiol deal collapsed, Real Madrid is expected to pivot to other defensive targets:
-
Riccardo Calafiori: The Arsenal and Italian national team defender remains a top alternative.
-
Marc Cucurella: Spanish reports indicate that Mourinho is also open to signing the Chelsea left-back, though Cucurella already holds an offer from Atlético Madrid and interest from Barcelona this summer.
