Guardiola Unlikely to Take England Job Following Manchester City Verdict

The prospects of Pep Guardiola eventually taking charge of the England national team have receded significantly, as Manchester City’s financial case threatens to make a potential partnership undesirable for both parties.

This assessment was put forward by Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué, author of Guardiola’s recent biography, during an interview with talkSPORT, rather than representing an official declaration from the former Manchester City manager or the Football Association (FA).

According to Balagué, Guardiola kept FA officials waiting for nearly two months in 2024 before deciding to sign a contract extension with Manchester City, prompting the governing body to subsequently appoint Thomas Tuchel.

While Guardiola’s name was tipped to resurface following the conclusion of Tuchel’s tenure, Balagué clarified: “I don’t think the FA would want a divisive manager right now, nor do I think Pep himself would want the job.”

The development follows an independent commission’s official verdict finding Manchester City guilty of severe financial breaches covering the period between the 2009–10 and 2017–18 seasons, alongside most charges related to failing to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation.

Manchester City have responded by lodging a comprehensive appeal, asserting that the decision contains fundamental errors of law, principle, and fact, and maintaining that the club possesses conclusive evidence supporting its position. Appeal proceedings will remain confidential until the ruling is authorized for publication.

Sanctions for Manchester City have yet to be finalized, though the commission holds broad disciplinary powers ranging from fines and points deductions to severe sporting penalties, with the maximum potential scenario involving expulsion from the Premier League should the conviction stand.

There is no evidence suggesting Guardiola had prior knowledge of any violations, and the manager reaffirmed his support for the club, its board, and supporters following the verdict, stating: “I was and always will be behind the club.” Consequently, his distance from the England role remains Balagué’s analytical assessment rather than a definitive decision.
