Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola expressed his sympathy for Xabi Alonso in his current precarious situation at Real Madrid.
The Spanish coach’s comments came during the pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash between Real Madrid and City, a match that will be crucial for Alonso’s future at the Santiago Bernabéu.
When asked what advice he would give Alonso in his current predicament, Guardiola replied, “He has to take matters into his own hands. He won’t be able to do anything for him. I’m not going to do anything for him. You liked the headline, didn’t you?”
The “Spanish philosopher” meant that Alonso should focus on his own affairs and not wait for anyone’s help.
He added, “I wish him all the best. I don’t know the future; you know better than I do. I haven’t spoken to Florentino Pérez, and he hasn’t told me that tomorrow is Xabi’s last match. If you don’t win big games, you’ll face difficulties, but Xabi is in control and knows what he has to do.” He added, “It’s difficult to coach Real Madrid or Barcelona because of the pressure; it’s all about winning.”
He concluded, “This happened to us at City last season. Xavi is capable of overcoming this situation and moving forward.”
