Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon stole the show with a stunning four-goal haul in his team’s 6-1 victory over Qarabag in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 playoff.
The England international opened the scoring in the third minute, then added three more goals in quick succession in the 32nd, 33rd, and 45th minutes of the match played in Baku.
Gordon’s four goals cemented his place in history.
The 24-year-old became Newcastle’s all-time leading scorer in the Champions League with 10 goals, surpassing Alan Shearer’s record of six.
Gordon also became only the second English player to score four goals in a single Champions League match, after Harry Kane for Bayern Munich against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024.
He is also the first player to score four goals in a Champions League knockout match since Erling Haaland for Manchester City against RB Leipzig on March 14, 2023.
Gordon is only the second English player to reach 10 or more goals in a single Champions League season, after Harry Kane in the 2024-25 season.
Now Gordon must focus on Newcastle’s next task, when the Magpies face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday, before hosting Qarabag in a seemingly manageable second leg at St. James’ Park next Tuesday.
