The name of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has emerged in recent hours as a potential interim replacement for manager Arne Slot at the helm of the Reds.
The Dutchman’s future is hanging in the balance due to declining results and performances, and after almost all his attempts to resolve Liverpool’s major crisis this season have failed.
Slot still enjoys the support of the board, although it is diminishing daily, and officials have already begun exploring other available options should they decide to dismiss him.
According to English media, Liverpool’s management is considering appointing Gerrard as interim manager until the end of the season, then hiring a more experienced manager permanently starting next season.
Gerrard has a reasonably respectable coaching career. He made a promising start with Rangers, leading the Scottish club to the league title after years of absence, but his subsequent experiences at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia were less successful.
Liverpool officials are aware that signing a world-class manager this season is virtually impossible, as all current managers are under contract with their clubs and are unlikely to leave now.
The initial plan was to bring in Jürgen Klopp on an interim basis until the end of the season, but the German has no intention of leaving his position at Red Bull and returning to management, making Steven Gerrard the most logical option at present.
