Liverpool suffered their fourth consecutive defeat after losing 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield in the eighth round of the English Premier League.
Liverpool lost for the first time two rounds ago, 2-1, to Crystal Palace, then lost the last round before the international break to Chelsea by the same scoreline. In between, they lost 1-0 to Galatasaray in Turkey in the Champions League.
This is the first time Liverpool has lost four consecutive matches since 2014 under manager Brendan Rodgers.
Bryan Mbeumo gave United an early lead in the first minute, before Cody Gakpo equalized in the 73rd minute. However, the lead was short-lived, as Harry Maguire headed the winner for the visitors in the 84th minute.
Gakpo, in particular, was unlucky despite scoring a goal. He missed three shots, hitting the post and crossbar during his attempts, the first time he did so since Darwin Nunez hit the post and crossbar four times against Chelsea last year.
Mohamed Salah received harsh criticism after missing several clear chances, which led to manager Arne Slot substituting him for Jeremie Virempong in the final minutes of the match.
Liverpool’s tally remains at 15 points in third place, widening the gap with leaders Arsenal to four points and one point behind second-place Manchester City. Manchester United, meanwhile, has 13 points, sitting ninth in the Premier League standings.
