Cristiano Ronaldo broke his jinx against Germany, leading Portugal to a 2-1 victory over the German national team at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals.
The Germans took the lead through Florian Wirtz, but Francisco Conceição equalized, and Ronaldo scored the winning goal in the 71st minute.
Ironically, this was Portugal’s first victory over Germany since 2000, when Francisco Conceição’s father, Sergio, scored a hat-trick for Portugal against the German national team at the Euros.
Before this match, Ronaldo had played five matches with Portugal against Germany, both in the Euros and the World Cup, losing all of them and scoring only one goal.
But finally, the German jinx was over for the 40-year-old Ronaldo, who scored his second goal against the Germans, leading his country to the UEFA Nations League final, where they will face the winner of the match between France and Spain next Sunday.
Ronaldo now has the opportunity to claim his first official title after four years of failing to win a single trophy with either club or country.
Ronaldo’s goal tally in world football reached 937, and he remains the all-time leading scorer for national teams with 135 goals, far ahead of the nearest contenders.
