Barcelona have reached an agreement with Marc Bernal to extend the young midfielder’s contract until June 2031, with the formal signing of documents and official announcement expected soon to secure one of La Masia’s brightest graduates.
According to newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the signing ceremony could take place this week between matches against Galatasaray and Real Betis, attended by president Joan Laporta, vice-president Rafa Yuste, sporting director Deco, and Bojan Krkić.
The new agreement includes a staggering release clause set at 500 million euros, adding two years to Bernal’s previous contract which was set to expire in 2029, reflecting the board’s conviction that he forms an essential pillar of the club’s long-term project.
Barcelona had previously improved the player’s terms in September 2025, months after his first-team debut and a severe knee injury, before he returned to the pitch following a 383-day layoff.
Bernal made his senior debut at 17 years and 84 days old in August 2024, featuring in three league matches before suffering his injury against Rayo Vallecano—a blow that halted his promising breakout under Hansi Flick.
Following his recovery, the midfielder featured in 33 official matches last season totaling 1,313 minutes, scoring five goals—including a brace against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-finals—while appearing in the opening nine games this campaign with 338 minutes under his belt.
Standing at 1.93 meters tall, the 19-year-old boasts exceptional ball-winning abilities, spatial awareness, and deep-lying playmaker qualities—traits that prompted Flick to hand him an early breakthrough, and he now benefits from playing alongside Rodri in midfield.
Having joined Barcelona’s academy at the age of six, Bernal’s renewal extends the club’s policy of securing the generation of 2007, which features Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí, with the agreement moving to its official phase upon signature and announcement.
