Hansi Flick’s anger towards the Barcelona board intensified after the 4-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the 2026 Copa del Rey semi-final.
According to the newspaper Sport, Flick has a close relationship with former president Joan Laporta, yet the German coach is questioning the latter’s decision to hold board elections mid-season.
Laporta had set mid-March as the date for the elections and resigned from his position – as per regulations – handing over the reins to Rafa Ucete on an interim basis. The new board is scheduled to begin its duties at the start of July.
Barcelona is a unique club, and Flick is passionate about and appreciates the distinctive characteristics of the Blaugrana institution, but in recent days he has not fully understood the reason for holding presidential elections mid-season.
Flick believes this timing is very wrong and illogical, as it will undoubtedly affect the players’ morale and reduce their focus. He considers the surrounding events to be among the main reasons for the 4-0 defeat against Atlético Madrid.
Laporta himself was forced to explain the reasons for holding the elections at this time, and Flick ultimately expressed his understanding, although he remains angry about the timing clashing with the middle of the season.
