FIFA President Gianni Infantino has indicated that world football’s governing body is seriously considering a future expansion of the World Cup. The move aims to ensure that nations across all continents receive a fair opportunity to compete in the sport’s biggest tournament.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, made history by featuring 48 teams for the first time—a format currently set to continue for the 2030 and 2034 editions.

However, rumors have emerged suggesting the tournament could expand to 64 teams, potentially returning to the USA in 2038. Other reports indicate this expansion could happen much sooner, specifically starting with the Saudi Arabia edition.

When questioned about these possibilities, Infantino responded: “We will certainly analyze this after the World Cup. When we organize the World Cup, it must be for the entire world, not just for Europe and South America.”

He added: “We must allow every country the dream of participating in the World Cup.”

Meanwhile, sources close to Saudi authorities have stated that the Kingdom is fully prepared to host the 2034 World Cup with 64 teams if required.

Similarly, hosting an expanded 64-team tournament for the 2030 World Cup is not expected to pose significant challenges. The 2030 edition will be shared among three primary hosts—Spain, Morocco, and Portugal—with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to commemorate the centenary of the inaugural tournament.
