Everton has become available for a potential takeover after The Friedkin Group expressed readiness to sell its controlling stake in the English club, provided an investor emerges who can demonstrate the capacity to advance the club’s project.
This position does not imply that the American owner has made a definitive decision to depart. Initial moves began in September with a search for a strategic investor to acquire a minority stake and inject fresh capital, before discussions broadened to encompass the sale of a majority interest.
According to a report by The Athletic, The Friedkin Group will only relinquish control to a buyer deemed capable of elevating Everton to a higher level, while remaining prepared to continue funding the club if a suitable offer fails to materialize.
The group acquired Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in December 2024 through its UK subsidiary, Roundhouse Capital, putting an end to a prolonged period of financial instability and failed negotiations with multiple suitors.
Since completing the transaction, management has restructured a significant portion of high-interest debt and secured financing under improved terms backed by the new stadium, rendering Everton’s financial footing considerably more stable and attractive to potential investors.
However, the close of the summer transfer window triggered sharp supporter backlash after the club sold players valued at nearly £100 million—generating approximately £25 million in profit—without delivering the squad reinforcements fans anticipated.
A proposed £45 million deal for Folarin Balogun collapsed in the final moments, while supporters actively protested the potential sale of academy graduate Harrison Armstrong before the club ultimately pulled out of the transaction.
With the Friedkin family also holding controlling stakes in Italy’s AS Roma and France’s AS Cannes, alongside efforts to launch an ice hockey franchise in Houston, questions remain regarding whether making Everton available for purchase signals a strategic portfolio realignment or the prelude to a complete exit.
