Breel Embolo converted a clinical penalty to open the scoring for Switzerland against Qatar in their 2026 World Cup Group B encounter.
Switzerland’s Remo Freuler won the penalty following a reckless challenge by Qatari goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada inside the box. Embolo, who had previously faced travel and entry difficulties into the United States prior to the tournament, stepped up to take the spot-kick.
The striker made no mistake, confidently slotting the ball into the back of the net in the 17th minute to give his country an early lead. Notably, this strike marks the very first penalty kick awarded and scored in the 2026 World Cup across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Embolo’s World Cup Scoring Record
This goal marks Breel Embolo’s 3rd career World Cup goal. His previous two tournament goals were scored during the 2022 Qatar World Cup group stage, where he found the net against both Cameroon and Serbia.
