Hugo Ekitike’s performance in the third round of the Carabao Cup surprised everyone who watched Liverpool’s match against Southampton.
The French international came on as a substitute for Alexander Isak at the start of the second half and received a yellow card in the 53rd minute.
The score was tied at 1-1, until Ekitike scored the second goal in the 85th minute, which sent Liverpool through to the fourth round.
Strangely, despite receiving a yellow card, Ekitike decided to celebrate the goal by taking off his shirt, earning a second yellow card and then being sent off, to the astonishment of his teammate Jeremie Frimpong.
According to the BBC, this expulsion will result in Ekitike missing the upcoming Premier League match against Crystal Palace, which angered manager Arne Slot, who described the player’s behavior as “extremely stupid.”
This is undoubtedly one of the “stupidest” incidents of the season, and the player was subjected to severe criticism from fans at Anfield, on social media, and even Slot himself.
