The South Giza Prosecution has referred Egypt national team and Pyramids FC star Ramadan Sobhi to trial on forgery charges.
Ramadan Sobhi was arrested last July upon his return from the Pyramids training camp in Turkey after being accused of paying someone to take exams at an institute instead of him.
The incident dates back to last May, when a person was arrested at an institute in the Abu El-Nomros area while taking exams under Ramadan’s name. He later claimed that the Egyptian football star had ordered him to do so in exchange for a large financial reward.
Ramadan Sobhi appeared before the prosecution again and was released on bail of EGP 100,000. However, the court will review the case, and the former Al-Ahly player faces a significant penalty if the forgery charge is proven against him.
The penalty for forgery under Egyptian law ranges from one to five years of hard labor. If the charge is proven, Ramadan Sobhi may also be required to pay substantial compensation.
Ramadan Sobhi has been one of the most prominent Egyptian football players in recent years, but his career has been plagued by problems recently, from his alleged doping convictions (which he was acquitted of) to the seemingly insignificant forgery case.
