Real Madrid star Dani Carvajal received a bizarre red card in the Champions League match against Marseille.
In the 71st minute, with the score tied at 1-1, Carvajal became agitated with a Marseille player and bizarrely headbutted him.
The referee initially showed a yellow card, but after consulting VAR, the referee decided the 33-year-old deserved to be sent off for unjustified violence.
Fortunately for Carvajal, despite Real Madrid playing the final third of an hour with ten men, they managed to secure victory thanks to a penalty kick converted by Kylian Mbappé in the 81st minute.
His direct red card means Carvajal will miss three matches due to suspension, according to UEFA’s direct expulsion regulations.
Thus, the right-back will miss matches against Qaraat Almaty, Juventus, and Liverpool, but will return against Olympiacos in matchday five.
Carvajal’s absence will be an ideal opportunity for Trent Alexander-Arnold to start at right-back, but if the Englishman is injured or suspended, Xabi Alonso will undoubtedly be in trouble due to his captain’s absence from those difficult matches.
