Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has expressed his regret over the injury Jamal Musiala suffered as a result of his actions. Media reports have revealed that the Italian was forced to seek the help of a psychologist to overcome this ordeal.
Donnarumma’s violent tackle on Musiala while he was chasing a ball resulted in the Bayern Munich star suffering a fracture in his left fibula and ligament damage, which will keep him out of action for at least four months.
Donnarumma was subjected to harsh criticism from Bayern Munich, particularly from Manuel Neuer, who deemed him “unsportsmanlike” and expressed surprise that he had not checked on Musiala on the pitch.
In his first statement regarding the incident, Donnarumma said, “I am very shocked, and I certainly did not mean to hurt Musiala.”
Vincenzo Raiola, Donnarumma’s agent, revealed what happened during and after the match, saying, “Gigio couldn’t bear to see Musiala injured, so he preferred to step away to give the medical staff the space they needed to deal with the situation.”
He added, “Once he went to the dressing room, he called me, which is unusual for him, and clearly told me, ‘I’m upset and emotionally exhausted.’ There was no intention of hurting him.”
According to Radio Monte Carlo, Donnarumma was in a very bad mood after the match, and he contacted Musiala via text message to inquire about his condition. He agreed to meet him in person in the Bayern dressing room to apologize.
Deeply distressed, Donnarumma consulted Paris Saint-Germain’s psychologist, Joaquin Valdés, who tried to calm the goalkeeper and assured him that the incident was not intentional and that there was no need for all this guilt.
Donnarumma’s journey continues in the Club World Cup, as he faces Real Madrid in the semi-finals on Wednesday, while Musiala has returned to Germany with Bayern Munich and is preparing to undergo surgery soon.
