Cristiano Ronaldo has officially become the joint-second most-capped player in World Cup history following his appearance in Portugal’s final group-stage clash against Colombia at the 2026 World Cup.
Ronaldo Equals Matthäus Record After Historic Uzbekistan Strike
This tournament marks Ronaldo’s sixth World Cup appearance. By scoring earlier in the tournament against Uzbekistan, the Portuguese icon became the first player in football history to find the net in six different editions of the world’s most prestigious tournament.
With his appearance against Colombia, “The Don” added another milestone to his legendary career by reaching 25 World Cup matches. In doing so, he surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose (24 matches) and equaled another German legend, Lothar Matthäus, as the second most-capped player in tournament history.
Ronaldo’s eternal rival, Lionel Messi, remains the absolute record holder for the most World Cup appearances with 28 matches, a tally expected to reach 29 if he features against Jordan.
Age Defying Milestones for the Portuguese Icon
By participating in the 2026 edition, Ronaldo became the second-oldest outfield player (non-goalkeeper) to ever feature in a World Cup. Furthermore, he stands as the second-oldest goalscorer in the tournament’s history, trailing only Cameroon’s legendary Roger Milla.
Throughout his 25 World Cup appearances, Ronaldo has netted 10 goals. His finest team achievement in the tournament remains a fourth-place finish with Portugal back during his debut tournament at Germany 2006.
