Real Madrid have reached an in-principle agreement with Thibaut Courtois to extend his contract, a step that cements the Belgian goalkeeper’s status as the Merengue’s undisputed first-choice option for the foreseeable future.
The new contract has not yet been formally signed, but both parties have settled the main outlines of the agreement, leaving only the final administrative procedures and the announcement date to be determined by the club.
Courtois’s current deal runs until June 2027, and the new agreement adds an extra season, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabéu until the summer of 2028. This aligns with Real Madrid’s policy of offering players over the age of thirty one-year contract renewals.
The decision stems from the board’s firm conviction that the 34-year-old remains among the world’s finest goalkeepers. Courtois has faced 37 shots across his opening eight matches this season—averaging 4.6 required saves per game, the highest rate he has encountered since moving to Madrid—while restricting his conceded goals to just nine.
Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018, making over 330 appearances in a white shirt and establishing himself as a pillar of the generation that restored the club’s domestic and European dominance.
The Belgian has collected 14 trophies during his first eight seasons, including two UEFA Champions League titles, three La Liga crowns, three FIFA Club World Cups, a Copa del Rey, three Spanish Super Cups, and two UEFA Super Cups.
His masterclass performance in the 2022 Champions League final against Liverpool remains his most famous milestone, where he produced nine saves to claim the Man of the Match award, before returning from an ACL tear and meniscus damage to keep a clean sheet against Borussia Dortmund in the 2024 final.
The new deal will grant Courtois a milestone tenth season with Real Madrid and bring him closer to fulfilling his stated desire to finish his career at the club, though the deal remains in the in-principle stage pending signing photographs and the official announcement.
