Manchester City have intensified their efforts to sign Liverpool’s Dutch winger Cody Gakpo before the close of the summer transfer window.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that City have advanced quickly in negotiations with the player’s representatives, as Gakpo has emerged as their preferred target to reinforce the wide areas.
Gakpo has reached an agreement on personal terms with Manchester City, while the two clubs have opened direct dialogue to discuss the final transfer fee and deal structure for a move to the Etihad Stadium.
According to journalist Paul Joyce, the potential package could reach around £85 million, though this valuation remains an expected figure rather than a finalized agreement between the clubs.
Liverpool are open to selling the Dutch international, but have conditioned any potential exit on securing a replacement winger first to avoid leaving a void in their squad.
Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, with the club benefiting from his versatility across both the left wing and central forward positions.
During the 2025–26 season, the 27-year-old made 52 appearances across all competitions, scoring 9 goals and providing 7 assists.
In Premier League play alone, Gakpo registered 7 goals and 5 assists in 36 matches, while reaching the milestone of 50 total goals for Liverpool in his 177th appearance last May.
