Manchester City clinched the 2024 Community Shield after edging past Manchester United 6-7 on penalties.
United took the lead in the 82nd minute through Alejandro Garnacho, but City managed to equalize in the 89th minute with a header from Bernardo Silva, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
Bernardo Silva missed City’s first penalty, but Ederson saved Jadon Sancho’s attempt, and then Jonny Evans missed another, while Manuel Akanji scored the winning penalty for Pep Guardiola’s side.
City thus broke their curse of losing the Community Shield in the last four consecutive years, adding the seventh title to their history.
City will start their Premier League title defense next week against Chelsea, while Manchester United will play Fulham next Friday.
