Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki led Manchester City to a 4-1 victory away to Crystal Palace in the second round of the Premier League, producing several historic statistics along the way.
Haaland opened the scoring in the 17th minute before Cherki struck twice in the 54th and 59th minutes. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma scored Palace’s only goal with an own goal in the 56th minute, while the Norwegian striker later returned to complete City’s four-goal haul.
Haaland Continues His Dominance Against Crystal Palace
Haaland has now scored 24 goals in only 16 Premier League appearances during August. He is one goal away from matching the competition record held by Andrew Cole, who scored 25 August goals in 44 matches.
The Norwegian also became only the third player to score in each of his first six Premier League matches against a single opponent. Raheem Sterling and Mohamed Salah previously achieved the same feat against Bournemouth.
Haaland has now scored 10 goals against Crystal Palace, making them the third Premier League opponent against whom he has reached double figures. He has scored 11 times against West Ham United and 10 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Cherki Joins Henry and Drogba
Cherki entered an exclusive group by becoming only the third player to record multiple goals in one match and multiple assists in another across his team’s opening two games of a Premier League campaign.
Thierry Henry first achieved the feat with Arsenal in 2004-05, before Didier Drogba repeated it with Chelsea in 2010-11. Cherki has now joined them after providing two assists against Bournemouth and scoring twice against Crystal Palace.
Manchester City have collected six points from their opening two matches. They will host Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, September 5, in the third round of the Premier League.
