Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been cleared to return to competitive football with immediate effect following a settlement that resolved disciplinary proceedings regarding a previous anti-doping violation.
The Football Association (FA) and Chelsea FC both confirmed the closure of the case, officially ending the suspension that had kept the Ukrainian international sidelined since December 2024 and threatened his professional career.
Why Was Mudryk’s Ban Lifted?
Mudryk was initially handed a four-year suspension after testing positive for the banned substance Meldonium during international duty with Ukraine.
The player appealed the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Subsequently, a settlement was reached between the FA, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and the player, agreeing that the time Mudryk had already served away from the game was sufficient.
The FA explained that the technical reporting thresholds for Meldonium concentrations have been updated since Mudryk was originally tested. Under the revised guidelines, the level of the substance found in his sample would not trigger a positive test result or constitute an anti-doping rule violation today.
Chelsea welcomed the resolution, stating that the club will support Mudryk in regaining match fitness and reintegrating into the first-team squad.
What Did Mudryk Say Upon His Return?
Following the announcement, Mudryk shared a message on his Instagram account:
“After a long fight, my four-year suspension has been overturned, and I am free to resume my career immediately. I am grateful that these proceedings are over and that I can return to football and think about my future.”
The Ukrainian winger added:
“This was the hardest period of my career. I never knowingly or intentionally took any banned substance.”
Mudryk expressed his gratitude to his family, friends, Chelsea FC, his teammates, the fans, his legal team, and everyone who supported him throughout the process. He concluded:
“My focus now is on returning to football, working hard every day, and making a positive contribution on the pitch. I look forward to this next chapter.”
Mudryk’s Career and Chelsea Record
Mudryk began his youth development at Metalist Kharkiv and Dnipro before joining Shakhtar Donetsk in 2016, followed by loan spells at Arsenal Kyiv and Desna Chernihiv. He made 44 senior appearances for Shakhtar, scoring 12 goals and attracting international attention during the 2022–2023 UEFA Champions League group stage.
Chelsea signed the winger in January 2023 for an initial fee of €70 million plus €30 million in potential add-ons, tying him to a contract through June 2031. Before his suspension, Mudryk made 73 appearances for the Blues across all competitions, registering 10 goals and 8 assists. His last competitive appearance before the ban came against Heidenheim in the UEFA Conference League on November 28, 2024.
