Real Madrid officially announced on Wednesday the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer, following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City.
The 31-year-old playmaker left Etihad Stadium at the end of last season, bringing down the curtain on a trophy-laden nine-year spell with the Premier League champions.
Silva had been heavily linked with a move to La Liga, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid reportedly chasing his signature. However, after the direct intervention of manager Jose Mourinho, Silva was convinced to join Los Blancos, puting pen to paper on a two-year contract with the Spanish giants.
With this blockbuster move, the Portuguese star becomes Real Madrid’s second summer signing. He follows defender Marc Cucurella, who recently joined from Chelsea in a deal worth €60 million.
Real Madrid’s summer transfer window business is far from over; the club is reportedly targeting departing Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries, while France international defender Ibrahima Konate is also close to joining after leaving Liverpool.
