Before the winter Mercato closes, Liverpool are moving to finalize a key signing

Liverpool are working to secure a significant deal in the final hours of the winter transfer window, hoping to add much-needed depth to manager Arne Slott’s squad until the end of the season.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are attempting to sign Lucarel Geertwoida, the RB Leipzig player currently on loan at Sunderland, based on a recommendation from Slott.

The Dutch center-back has worked with Slott for a long time at Feyenoord, and the manager believes his addition could partially resolve the defensive issues that have emerged at Anfield.

One of Geertwoida’s strengths is his versatility; he can also play at right-back, thus providing another solution given the injuries to Jeremy Frimpong and Conor Bradley.

Geertwoida joined Sunderland on loan for £2.5 million on the final day of the summer transfer window, with an option to buy for £22 million next summer.

Negotiations began between Liverpool and Sunderland in recent hours to discuss cutting short Geertwoida’s loan and returning him to RB Leipzig, with the Reds then signing him on loan from the German club until the end of the season.

It’s worth noting that Geertwoida has only made 17 appearances for Sunderland this season, suggesting that the English club would likely be willing to terminate his loan.
