Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has reignited the competition for the European Golden Shoe, awarded to the player with the most goals in European leagues this season.
The French international scored a hat-trick against Barcelona in El Clásico, which Real Madrid lost 4-3, taking over as La Liga’s top scorer with 27 goals, two ahead of Robert Lewandowski.
Goals are calculated using a points system, which gives Mbappé 54 points in the European Golden Shoe race, thanks to his 27 goals in La Liga.
The 25-year-old is in third place, with Sporting Lisbon and Liga top scorer Victor Gjokers leading the standings with 57 points, thanks to his 38 goals this season.
In second place is Egyptian star Mohamed Salah, who has scored 28 goals for Liverpool in the Premier League, which gives him 56 points.
What gives Mbappé a chance to win the Golden Shoe is the fact that Real Madrid has three matches remaining in La Liga, while Salah has only two matches remaining with Liverpool, while Gjokers has one match remaining with Sporting Lisbon before the end of the Portuguese league.
It’s worth noting that Barcelona is the club whose player has won the European Golden Shoe the most times, with eight, while Bayern Munich and Real Madrid players have each won the award five times. La Liga has a historical advantage, having won it 15 times.
